“Don’t Come Crying To Me”

This is something my mother said to me many times while I was growing up as a kid. I had this sort of rebellious, incorrigible streak deep within me that she felt needed to be brought under self-control. As a way of encouraging me to this end, she made it very clear she didn’t want me coming to her for any help if, and when, I got myself into trouble. Later on in my teen years she told me on a few different occasions: “If you end up in jail … DON’T call me. I won’t come to get you out. You can stay there and rot.”

Well … at the time that wasn’t much appreciated by yours truly.

But …

On the other hand, her constant insistence upon the inevitable potential of me unalterably messing up my life is the very thing which kept me from that end. And, perhaps, it helped to keep me in a place where I could actually hear and receive the Gospel of Christ when it was presented to me at age 19.

And you know what? My mom’s voice still rings loud-and-clear in my head to this day.

The many wise things my mom said to me (that I didn’t quite grasp at the time) are a core reason as to why I turned out half-way decent. I just am devastatingly sad that, as far as I know, neither she nor my dad came to saving faith in Christ. I honestly can’t rectify in my head why I got the “Get Out Of Hell Free” card and they didn’t. I only know that God is just and I rest in that, and that alone.

With that as the backdrop, here’s where I’m going with this. ——

In essence, God ofttimes says to us what my mom said to me:

If you won’t avail yourself of (and take heed to) the wisdom I’ve provided you in My Word, “Don’t Come Crying To Me.”

Therefore, If we want God’s wisdom to:

*Discern the times,

*Know what to say and

*Know what to do when the moment comes for us to act then …

We will need to be throughly furnished unto all good works through the input of His Word. Otherwise, we will be woefully unequipped to help ourselves and those we care about.

In the world we are living presently, we can no longer “fly blind” concerning the headwinds swirling around us everyday. We just can’t. I don’t know what else I can say except …

“Don’t Come Crying To Me” when the inevitable negative ramifications of your unwillingness to be prepared through spent time in the Word comes back to bite you.

Sound too harsh? Maybe. But, I trow not so.

But just in case ——

Let me rephrase it so as to be slightly more “user friendly” —

There is truly something supernatural that happens in the spiritual realm of our understanding when God’s living and eternal Word takes root and grows in the fertile soil of our eternal souls. And as we fill ourselves with its unalterable truths, we will then be able then to see through the prism of God’s perspective. We will be attuned to the mind of Christ which resides within each one of us who have been born-again through the shed blood of Christ on Calvary.

Do you realize it can come to the point where God will no longer be importuned, i.e., shut His ears to our pleas?

Jeremiah 7

13 And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the Lord, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not;

14 Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.

15 And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, even the whole seed of Ephraim.

16 Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee.

Jeremiah 11

6 Then the Lord said unto me, Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying, Hear ye the words of this covenant, and do them.

7 For I earnestly protested unto your fathers in the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, even unto this day, rising early and protesting, saying, Obey my voice.

8 Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do: but they did them not.

9 And the Lord said unto me, A conspiracy is found among the men of Judah, and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

10 They are turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, which refused to hear my words; and they went after other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers.

11 Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.

12 Then shall the cities of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem go, and cry unto the gods unto whom they offer incense: but they shall not save them at all in the time of their trouble.

13 For according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have ye set up altars to that shameful thing, even altars to burn incense unto Baal.

14 Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up a cry or prayer for them: for I will not hear them in the time that they cry unto me for their trouble.

Jeremiah 14

10 Thus saith the Lord unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the Lord doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.

11 Then said the Lord unto me, Pray not for this people for their good.

12 When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.

I don’t think there’s any need to belabor this. It seems God is trying to make His point very clear by mentioning it three times.

“I’ve sent you the prophets. I’ve used them to give you My Word. The ball is now in your court. Therefore if you won’t take heed: Don’t come crying to Me. I don’t want to hear it.”

Sound too harsh? Maybe. But, I trow not so.

Because God knows His people all too well He, in love, has given us His Word to read and heed.

Why the need for His Word?

Because …

Left to ourselves we will fall prey to the wisdom of this world and end up in the self-imposed prison of foolish disobedience suffering our own demise.”

Kind of sounds just like my mom who, in love, used to smack me upside the head for my own good.

With that, I’m reminded of the hymn:

When we walk with the Lord
in the light of his word,
what a glory he sheds on our way! {The ability to see through the prism of God’s perceptive wisdom.}
While we do his good will,
he abides with us still,
and with all who will trust and obey.

Refrain:
Trust and obey, for there's no other way
to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Please, let’s all open God’s Book of Instruction this week and let its truths strengthen our resolve to experience the reality of this old hymn.

We need God to shed His glory on our lives as we proceed on our journey to Glory.
