Psalm 64:9 - And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing. The context of this psalm has the emphasis directed towards those that don’t know and love God. David had observed, in his interaction with those around him, that there were those that didn’t fear God. The actions of their lives were an affront to the people of God and even to God himself. So, when I thought about writing about this verse I was going to focus on the unsaved that don’t fear God.

But, I got to thinking about those of us that truly are children of God through the shed blood of Yeshua. Do we fear God? I don’t care to get into a lengthy discussion about how to define the word “fear” in relation to God. Simply put: the fear of God is wrapped up in the idea of knowing that what we do or say will please Him rather than displease Him.

We live in a world that has very little desire to please God by doing what His Word has stated would please Him. He gave us a Book that lets us know what we, as His creation, can do to please Him. But the world doesn’t have this kind of fear within them.

I also think we live in a world of Believers that in many ways is very much the same as the lost around them. How much do WE really live in ways that are pleasing to the Father? Yeshua lived every moment of His life focusing His attention on pleasing His Father in EVERYTHING. He said in John 8:29 — “I do always those things that please him.”

Why did Yeshua always do the things that pleased His Father? It was out of love. And because He loved His Father, Yeshua aways wanted to please Him. A healthy fear of God says: I will obey my Father and do what He says because He loves me and I love Him. That’s, for me, what it means to fear God.

As I honestly try to take stock of my progression toward conformity to Yeshua (Romans 8:29), I know I’ve let my guard down a little in the fight to “do always those things that please Him.” Maybe I’ve grown a little weary battling with the world, the flesh, and the devil. It’s a daily battle. And maybe that’s why Paul encourages us in Galatians 6:9 to “not be weary in well doing.”

So, are our thoughts, words, actions, motives that which we know would please God? Do we truly fear God? Are we really any different than the world around us? Do the lost “consider of His doing” because of our progressive conformity to Yeshua that manifests itself in a genuine life that they are drawn to?

A good verse to sum up with is Galatians 2:20 — “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

I have to believe that a more consistent Galatians 2:20 life will give the lost world a reason to fear God and “consider of His doing.”

Let’s not just blame the world. Let’s point a finger or two at ourselves as well.
